Metrics Description Data Sources Used Detailed Calculation Description
Student Experience
Spread of classes across the day Avg hours a student is on-campus across the day for classes. Student Registration Data with scheduled Class Times. For each student, find all on-campus activities and count the spread of start time and end time between the first activity and last activity for a day for a particilar teaching period (i.e. Semester 1). Then average this across all students.
Early registration of the timetable No. of weeks between opening Timetable registration to students and when class commences. Specific data provided by Curtin. Time difference in weeks between class commencing and the opening of timetable registration to students.
Level of flexibility available to students (fully online, hybrid, fully in person). Percentage of lectures with more than one delivery option, including fully in person, recorded and/or fully online. Timetabled Activities with Activity Type. For each unit offering, find all activites which are lectures, then count the number delivered in a physical venue, and count those delivered online. Find the percentage of unit offerings with lectures delivered both at a physical venue and online.
Level of schedule choice (morning & afternoon/evening) Percentage of activities that have morning and afternoon/evening options. Timetabled Activities with Activity Type and Unit Offering Planned Size. For each unit offering, count activities that occur in the morning and afternoon/evening. Find the percentage of unit offerings with activities delivered in all times of day (i.e. morning, afternoon and evening). Excludes "Lectures", "Make Up Class" and "Block Teaching". Must have more than one delivery of a particular activity type.
Dedicated research days Percentage of research staff that have at least one teaching-free day per week. Timetabled Activities, with allocated Staff. For each research and teaching (exc. Research-only) staff member contracted for all main teaching weeks of a semester with a teaching fraction of more than 80% and part of the four main faculties, find how many weekdays the staff member has no more than 4 days with a scheduled teaching activity. Then find the percentage of staff meeting this criteria. Note - the Curtin timetable does not always attach staff members to teaching activities, meaning these numbers are an inaccurate representation of 'actual' teaching-free days.
Max total teaching hours Percentage of staff that do not teach beyond the max teaching hours per day. Timetabled Activities, with allocated Staff. For each staff member, calcuate the total teaching hours delivered per week. Then calculate the percentage of staff that teach no more than 20 hours in a week.
Staff Experience
Consistency of cohort activity sequencing (Theory before/after practice) Percentage of unit offerings with consistent sequencing of activities (i.e tutorial/lab/workshop sessions scheduled after (or before) their corresponding lecture within the same week). Timetabled Activities with Activity Type. For each unit offering, find all the lecture activity types and non-lecture activity types. Identify if the lecture activity type is scheduled either first or last in a week. Then find the percentage of unit offerings that meet this criteria.
Efficient rostering Percentage of activities that are clustered to enable efficient rostering of sessional staff. (3 or more consecutively taught deliveries in the same room) Timetabled Activities with Activity Type. For all Activity Types including "Tutorial", "Workshop", "Practical", "Studio", "Any Laboratory", find instances where activities belonging to a particular activity template is scheduled consecutively in the same room 3 or more times. Then calculate the percentage of activities which meets this criteria.
Room/booked frequency - standard operating hours Avg room/booked frequency within preferred operating hours (9:00am - 5:00pm, Mon - Fri). Timetabled Activities with scheduled Venue. Venue Data. For the selected weeks of the analysis, calculate the total hours available across all individual venues available within standard operating hours. Then identify the percentage of booked hours within the same venues and time-periods.
Room/booked frequency - extended operating hours Average percentage space frequency within extended operating hours (8:00am - 9:00pm, Mon - Fri, 8:00am - 6:00pm Sat). Timetabled Activities with scheduled Venue. Venue Data. For the selected weeks of the analysis, calculate the total hours available across all individual venues available within extended operating hours. Then identify the percentage of booked hours within the same venues and time-periods.
Resource Efficiency
Standard operating hours Percentage of class time scheduled within preferred operating hours (8:00am - 6:00pm, Mon - Fri). Timetabled Activities. Find the total timetabled hours within the designated weeks of the analysis then identify the percentage of this class time is scheduled within standard operating hours.
Preferred operating hours Percentage of class time scheduled within extended operating hours (9:00am - 5:00pm, Mon - Fri). Timetabled Activities. Find the total timetabled hours within the designated weeks of the analysis then identify the percentage of this class time is scheduled within preferred operating hours. UG=subject code level 4 and below, PG=5 to 7.
Number of cancelled classes Number of cancelled classes - Total. Specific data provided by Curtin. Sum the total number of cancelled classes for Data Entry and Draft Cancelled only. Exclude post-publication cancelled classes, which are included in C4.
Number of post-publication changes The number of changes between the timetable publication and census date. Specific data provided by Curtin. The count of the number of changes from the final timetabling publication until census date.
Total time to build timetable Number of weeks from start of the process to final publication Specific data provided by Curtin. Time difference in weeks between schedule open for data collection and end of class registration.
